The performance of full electric battery/fuel cell powered submarines compared to conventional submarines

The performance of full electric battery/fuel cell powered submarines compared to conventional submarines April 2019 - Both fuel cells and batteries are considered the solution to achieve emission free transport in multiple civil industries. The undersea defense industry can profit from this, since both technologies are applied in submarine designs.  However, will it also be possible to move from a hybrid power plant to a full electric power plant? And what are (with respect to the performance) the essential differences, advantages and disadvantages compared to conventional diesel-electric submarines? In order to asses this, Nevesbu has made two concept designs based on the conventional 1800 tons diesel-electric submarine MORAY 1800; the E-MORAY (a totally battery powered submarine) and the H2MORAY (a full electric battery/fuel cell powered submarine). 

Last year, the E-MORAY was presented which clearly showed the potential of full electric power plant solutions for submarines. At the UDT 2019 in Stockholmsmässan, Sweden, Sven Los will present the H2MORAY concept and the outcomes of Nevesbu’s research into the performance of full electric battery/fuel cell powered submarines compared to conventional submarines. The presentation will be held on 14 May, from 16:30-17:00 in Theatre 2.
